The history of the island of Rab:

The first recorded information about Rab can be found in the work of classical writers. It is quite certain, however, that the people on Rab lived much earlier. The findings of recent Paleolithic tools in the Lopar area prove that Paleolithic people lived in the area although we know very little about him. This early man was followed by more advanced Neolithic newcomers, and was settled by the Liburnians in the recent Neolithicthe area. There seem to be sufficient grounds for assuming that this was the age when the bay and the city of Rab were populated. Several Greeks and Roman geographers made the first mention of Rab. It was named as Arba, Arbia, Arbiana, Arbitana; the origin of this name is unknown. The current islanders, Slavic Croaten, adapted this name to their own language and changed it to Rab. The name Rab probably dates to the 7th century, ie immediately after the Slavs arrived on the island, but the earliest known document where we find the Croatian name of Rab is a 15th century statute in Latin which establishes the founding of the St. Euphememius Monastery ; the same monastery is keeping this document today.
