Rab island stretches northwest-south-east, 22 kilometers long from Cape Sorinj in the northwest to Cape Glavina in the southeast. At its widest point it is 11 kilometer across.

The Velebit Channel runs between Rab and the mainland; it is closest to land (1800m) at its southeastern most cape. The Paško Strait runs between Rab and Pag Island to the southeast, and Kvarnerić is to the west, towards the islands of Cres and Lošinj, while the Senjska Passage lies between Rab and the island of Krk to the northwest.

Climate :

Rab island has an “Adriatic type" Mediterranean climate with pleasant, warm summers and gently winters. The Kamenjak hills are mainly responsible for such an attractive climate, because they shelter it from the cold bura winds, most frequent in winter and early spring. The yugo blows up from the southeast in the fall, usually bringing rain. The maestral is most common in the summer months, a pleasant breeze that mitigates the summer heat.

The climate of Rab is especially conducive to tourism. There are about 2.600 hours of sunshine on the island, yearly, and the number of fully overcast days is quite small. The sense of warmth for the organism is quite favorable, so from April to October the climate is soothing, while in the spring and fall it is stimulating. The sea reaches temperatures suitable for swimming (over 20 C) from May to October, and the mean annual temperature of the sea is 16.73 C.

Dominant winds:
Bura:
Is a dry cold wind that blows from the North - East to the East - East. In the summer the bura can last for a few hours, in the winter it can go up to 14 days.
Jugo:
Is a warm humid wind that blows from the east - southeast to the south - southwest. The Jugo usually brings higher waves and rain. In the summer the Jugo usually blows one to three days, in the winter it can last three weeks. The sign that the Jugo turnout is a calm sea, a cloudy horizon, and the waves from the southeast are getting bigger.
Maëstral:
Is a daily thermal wind that blows from the northwest. This wind blows most in spring and autumn and also during the day.

Community Facilities: Water  :
Rab Island has more sources of fresh water than any other Adriatic island. Rab is one of the few islands along this coast that has its own water supply. On 11 November 1986 an undersea pipe was laid from the mainland to Rab. The final completion of the pipeline along Velebit and the subsequent piping of water from Hrmotine (the Senj hydroelectric plant) will mean great sacrifice for the islanders, but they do so willingly.
Electrical Energy :
Rab had its own power plant before the First World War, but it could only meet the needs of the town Rab. A few years after the Second World War, work was begun on a low-voltage network and the introduction of electricity to all the towns on the island. Then a new thermo power plant was built in the Palit area. An undersea cable was laid across Goli Island to Rab in 1963, with a capacity of 35 kV, and the local thermo power plant serves now as a back-up system wich can, in emergency, meet only a small percentage of Rab's needs. The capacity of the existing electric cable is no langer adequate, so by 1990 a new undersea cable for 110 kV will be laid from Krk to Rab , with a 110 kV transformer on Rab , wich should satisfy  the long run needs for electrical energy.
